  • Overview

    This individual serves in a clinical capacity as a Primary Counselor and carries an assigned caseload consisting of children, adolescents and/or adults with behavioral and mental health issues. Service provision includes evaluative services, clinical treatment, therapeutic interventions and discharge planning, as well as monitoring client progress related to psychotropic medication. Consultation with referral sources and completing progress reports is necessary, as indicated. Individual and family therapy are the core clinical offerings of this position. This position includes providing services at schools and licensed satellite locations, which will require acting as the agency liaison as indicated.



    • Provides evaluative services, treatment planning, clinical treatment, referral services, therapeutic interventions and discharge planning, as well as monitors client progress related to psychotropic medication.
    • Complies with necessary documentation for all administrative aspects of clinical counseling.
    • Adheres to confidentiality limits as required by law and licensing standards. 
    • Provides case management services and crisis intervention as necessary. 
    • Conferences shared clinical cases with supervisor and cooperating counselor(s). 
    • Takes responsibility for improving clinical skills and expanding knowledge base related to effective strategies for treating and meeting the needs of caseload as well as maintaining engagement of clients and caregivers.
    • Represents The Community YMCA Counseling & Social Services in a professional and positive manner within the community and with agency referral resources.
    • Handles crisis calls and makes appropriate referrals.
    • Acts as an agency representative at satellite locations and assists the agency with licensing requirement compliance.
    • Acquires knowledge ongoing regarding standards and requirements for licensure, accreditation and funding.
    • Actively seeks supervision in response to client needs.
    • Is responsive in supervisory sessions and receptive to identifying training needs.
    • Is supportive of Community YMCA Annual Campaign fundraising efforts.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the Electronic Health Record.

    This position includes treatment of individuals including children adolescents and with mental health issues and requires the expertise of a clinician trained and experienced in Play Therapy, Parenting Counseling and additional treatment and engagement strategies. It is required that this Counselor demonstrate competency with regard to planning treatment for varied problematic and complicated individual and family issues. The minimum of a Master’s Degree in Psychology, Clinical Counseling, Social Work or other related Human Services concentration is necessary, accompanied by New Jersey licensure or eligibility. Furthermore, this Counselor needs to demonstrate proficiency in Individual, group and family therapy. Other required skills include being able to conduct a diagnostic interview toward the development of a relevant treatment plan. Also needed is the ability to speak and write in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, this position requires an individual, who is a good team player. Demonstration of a high level of cultural competence, sensitivity and responsiveness is also necessary.
