  • Overview

    Assist in supervision of a group of campers assigned during the season day camp. Provide a quality experience to children and parents focused on our YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility

     

    Responsibilities

    • Assist Senior Counselor and counselors in supervising assigned group for the summer; consistently providing a safe environment
    • Assist in Planning and Implementing program activities that are developmentally appropriate and consistent with the YMCA core values; following designed schedule set for your assigned group
    • Assist in maintaining accurate attendance records; tracking students before and after each activity
    • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards; assist in maintaining equipment and supplies, returning to proper storage places after each usage
    • Attend mandatory staff trainings and meetings; participate in camp functions, Family nights, Carnival, etc.
    • Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies 
    • Maintain positive relations with co-workers; families on family nights.
    • Perform first aid and follow emergency procedures when necessary as described in the Camp Staff Manual.

     

    •   Assist specialists in all activities with campers, i.e. arts and crafts, sports, drama, etc.; actively participate in each of the camp areas, role modeling teamwork
    • Arrive at your designated location by 8:45a.m. in your staff shirt and sneakers, or closed-toe shoes, and be prepared to work, adhering to the YMCA dress code.
    • ADHERE to policies related to boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management training. Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures, including reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations

    Qualifications

    The employee must be 16-17 years of age; obtain working papers. The counselor must enjoy working outdoors, be open to assist in the recreational areas of sports, nature, arts and crafts, group games and music/drama; be willing to further develop his/her leadership, team-building, listening and group work skills.

    Physical Demands:

    The employee must have the ability to lead, plan, and participate in a range of activities in an outdoor environment and setting; and the ability to walk, stand, lift, bend and stretch.
