Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Camp, the Aquatic Counselor will be responsible for the safety of the campers and providing a safe and sanitary pool and pond environment. The employee must be a mature, responsible individual, be able to perform a variety of tasks, including canoeing instruction.

 

Responsibilities

  •  ENFORCE all regulations and procedures as required.
  •  REMAIN on duty and in an alert state until properly relieved from duty.
  • ARRIVE on time in staff shirt and bathing suit, following dress code.
  • MAINTAIN cleanliness and good order on the pool deck and pond area.
  • PERFORM assigned duties of maintenance at the aquatic center.
  • ADMINISTER first aid and complete accident forms as necessary.
  • PLAN and IMPLEMENT aquatic program activities according to weekly themes.
  • INSTRUCT swim class levels as assigned in accordance with the principles and methods of the YMCA Progressive Swim Program.
  • PERFORM testing of each student at the beginning and end of each week.
  • MAINTAIN accurate records of attendance, performance and achievement.
  • PREPARE progress cards, forms and records as required.
  • SUPERVISE all students at all times throughout the instructional period.
  • ENCOURAGE and RECOGNIZE progress and achievement.
  • LIFEGUARDING and SUPERVISING rentals on weekends as scheduled.
  • ACTS in accordance with YMCA philosophy and character development values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility; and policies and procedures (as stated in the Camp Zehnder Staff Manual) while on the job.
  • ADHERE to policies related to boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management training. Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures, including reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

 

 

Qualifications

The employee must be a mature, responsible individual. The employee must be able to perform a variety of tasks, including canoeing instruction.

Be at least 16 years of age, and hold a current YMCA and/or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

YMCA Swim Instructor Certifications (recommended but not required for camp)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee must have the ability to teach and participate in swim lessons in outdoor pool; ability to walk, stand, lift, bend and stretch
