  • Overview

    Under the guidance of the Head Swim Team Coach of the RBY, an Assistant Coach 1 requires no former coaching experience, however must have aquatic experience and working with kids and young adults. A Coach 1 will carry out the workouts set forth by the Head Coach or Coach 2 or 3, correct and instruct all stroke and drill methods used by team, attend any or all dual meets, Invitational meets and Championship meets that is on the official team calendar. In addition, a Coach 1 is responsible to carry out additional tasks set forth by the Head Coach and/or the supervising Coach 2 or 3 that may be needed in order to meet the needs of his/her job, that contributes to the goal of maintaining a successful YMCA competitive swim program.


    1. Directs and supervises program activities as assigned to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
    2. While not directly responsible, this position is aware of and supports efforts to insure daily pool operations adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
    3. Understands proper maintenance of pools and reports any issues to supervising personnel.
    4. Coaches age group swimmers in accordance with workouts provided by supervising coach(es).
    5. Correct and instruct all stroke and drill methods used by team
    6. Attend any or all dual meets, Invitational meets and Championship meets that are on the official team calendar unless otherwise instructed.
    7. Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
    8. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
    9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Provides staff with feedback, coaching, guidance and support.


    1. Basic understanding Competitive Swimming
    2. Good communication skills
    3. 30 days to acquire and maintain certifications required to coach a YMCA and USA swim team in New Jersey including but not limited to Red Cross or YMCA, Coaches Safety Training, ASCA Level I coach, CPR, First Aid,
    4. Is encouraged to enroll and pass ASCA Level’s II and III coach.
    5. 6 months or the next available date to complete their Principles of YMCA Swimming course.
    6. Must meet the above time table for certifications to be eligible for continued employment. No Coach 1 will be allowed on the pool deck alone without the proper certifications.
