  • Overview

    Under the direct supervision of the Associate Membership Director, the Youth Development Specialist is responsible for quality child care and babysitting when in child watch, age-appropriate supervision in our teen zone, and active participation when assisting with our family events. The Specialist will have a complete knowledge of the YMCA mission, character values, and programs which include policies, programs and the facility. The Specialist will implement the program activities, and guide the development of the children, ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy environment. He/she must interact with adults and the children in a harmonious manner.



    • Provide exceptional care for children during the day to day operation of the Child Watch room and Teen Zone. Interact with children/teens during activities and during special family events when scheduled.
    • Help to implement the activities scheduled in an appropriate manner, meeting the needs of the children/teens physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually.
    • Provide careful, attentive care and is alert at all times.
    • Use a diverse selection of materials, toys and experiences for all participants 
    • Help to provide a program that adheres to all YMCA health and safety standards
    • Facilitate a program that promotes positive play and welcomes children/teens.
    • Uphold the association’s child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, and proper reporting procedures. Follow the procedures and policies for the Child Watch room & Teen Zone as outlined.
    • Appropriately communicate with parents during sign in and sign out process.
    • Complete all paper work required for reporting incidents and accidents.
    • Follow the YMCA guidelines for dress code, punctuality and attendance.
    • Attend to the need of every child enthusiastically.
    • Accurately verify membership upon sign in. 
    • Financial Development: Actively support the Annual campaign.
    • Service Excellence: Embrace and adhere to service excellence standards; provide outstanding service to members and non-members.
    • Personal and Professional Development: Demonstrates YMCA core character values of honest, respect, responsibility and caring in all interactions with employees, members, staff and others; commit to ongoing professional development.
    • Work shifts as scheduled. It is the responsibility of the Youth Development Specialist to find coverage if he/she cannot work assigned shift, as well as notify supervisor.
    • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth/teens.
    • Complete required on line training courses.
    • Follow mandated abuse reporting procedures, including reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations




    The individual must be at least 18 years of age.

    Minimum of 1 year experience working with children/teens, possibly in a Child Care facility or as a babysitter.

    The individual should have a broad understanding of childcare policies.

    The individual must possess and demonstrate the ability to engage in all the activities associated with the daily routines of the program’s children, including but not limited to: interacting with children at floor level, lifting children and equipment, participating in activities such as reading.

    Must possess oral and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both adult and children.

    Light lifting, bending, sitting/kneeling on the floor.


    HS diploma/some College preferred
